PictusIt can be used as a lightweight picture viewer too.

There's a few "thumbnail generators", namely MysticThumbs, FastPictureViewer Codec and SageThumbs. I'm using the latter, and it works really well for what it is. -
Brilliant. Thanks for the link. It works perfect. I have been using TGAViewer but it's hit and miss and you have to open/close every image.PictusIt can be used as a lightweight picture viewer too.

I have been using XnView for many years
https://www.xnview.com/en/xnviewmp/
Its an image viewer that switches between image or thumbnail mode by pressing the 'Enter' key. You can use mouse wheel to scroll to the next and previous image and it supports 500 image formats and and can convert from and to many special formats.
I also really like the batch conversion tools that it has where you can customize your own batch operations like resizing, adding watermarks, conversion of formats etc. and save the presets to batch process folders at a later stage.

i'm using Imagine viewer for most things: http://www.nyam.pe.kr/dev/imagine/
it's lean, blazing fast (dare i say: a lot faster than xnview) and quite configurable.downside: if it hits a broken image file it'll just crash and burn instead of showing a read error or the like. also gif animations don't render as well as in xnview (mine anyway).

It's based from xnview library which mean it support a lot file type to generate thumbnail

Dude i fucking love you, sagethumbs broke some windows10 features for me (picture display in sticky notes, thumbnail bugs) and i have been looking for an alternative ever since!

Beware, Pictus is abandonware now, and has its own bugshttps://github.com/poppeman/Pictus/issues/79
Pictthumb.dll locks files #79Windows 10 [Version 10.0.16299.431]
I've noticed that recently we've started to experience troubles with version control software(perforce, git) and graphics software like photoshop. It started to give an error that some files are locked for write. I've discovered that the process Com Surrogate (dllhost.exe) was started by Pictus image viewer via pictthumb.dll. I think its some background process for generating previews.
Please, please, please fix! -
A big +1 for using XnView instead of win-explorer to browse images. You can customize many things, like Sort filters, thumbnails info, etc (here my Xnview UI for example). You can even configure a shortcut to send selections in a software (like Photoshop). -
